Ethernet Solutions by Omron

Omron Ethernet Solutions

May 31, 2004 (ASIA PACIFIC) - Efficient and reliable transmission of information from the field up to the control level has always been in demand in the automation industry. In this technological driven age, companies are looking for cost effective and efficient means of control and data collection. Thus, the trend of Industrial Networking moving towards Industrial Ethernet is emerging.

To satisfy this growing need, Omron provides a range of products with Ethernet connectivity which facilitate monitoring and controlling of process from the control room.

Introducing OMRON Ethernet Solution - CS1/CJ1 Ethernet Series Communication Cards with a Selectable Transmission Speed of 10/100Mbps

These Omron CS1/CJ1 Ethernet cards provide users with e-mail functions so they can receive production data or equipment error messages with the appropriate configurations.

The cards are able to receive e-mail, and reply with the necessary data files attached. This makes remote data archival and system monitoring achievable. TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/ Internet Protocol) connection and UDP/IP (User Datagram Protocol, an implementation unique for each user) connection are also available for communication with other Ethernet nodes.

For PC applications, e.g. SCADA, users can also access data in CS1/CJ1 PLC via Ethernet and OPC (OLE for Process Control).

To further enhance process monitoring, Omron offers the NS-series Programmable Terminals, with Ethernet connectivity. NS-series can be connected to a maximum of 98 PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) nodes in the network.

Besides being able to monitor different PLCs on the production floor, users can archive production data by inserting a Compact Flash card in the NS-Series Programmable Terminal. Thereafter, data files can be transferred back to the control room using simple FTP commands. In addition, for QC (Quality Control) checking, images of defectives products can be captured via NS-Series if a Vision System is connected to it.

Such images can be captured either via NS-series or by using a Vision System. Omron provides Vision Controllers with Ethernet connectivity such as F210 and F500 series. Using the Ethernet, users are able to control the basic operations of the Vision System, such as inspection execution, sending of data or the result of an inspection. Sophisticated functions such as reading and changing of parameters of the scene, saving and loading of images etc., are also possible, by simply sending an open command via Ethernet to the Vision Controller.

Ethernet’s strength comes in its ability to monitor and display real time data on the enterprise’s intranet, plus generate and sending emails of alarm events to remote locations for operation supervisors. This can provide significant benefits in the area of remote diagnostics and statistical data gathering, both of which help keep maintenance costs down and maximize productive manufacturing time.

Where is the Cost Saving?

The cost savings comes in reduced down-time and elimination of travel costs associated with sending systems engineering specialists to troubleshoot problems, take corrective action and restart/ monitor operations.

With Ethernet’s ability to send an email or pager signal to alert supervisory staff to alarms and failures, appropriate action can be taken faster. Systems engineers can dial into the system and troubleshoot operations on-line without having to travel to the site. With new capabilities to edit programming remotely and emulate the controls without causing safety risks of operating equipment, systems can be restarted and monitored for correct action in minutes instead of days.
